Looks like Manchester City might be saying goodbye to Ederson this summer. With that in mind, they're thinking about bringing back James Trafford from Burnley.
Ederson is reportedly weighing up a move to Galatasaray and hasn’t triggered the option to extend his contract until 2027. Given the situation, City are expected to cash in on him during this transfer window.
After joining the club back in 2017, Ederson seems ready for a new challenge. He’s been a massive part of City’s success, racking up 372 appearances and winning 18 trophies including six Premier League titles and a Champions League.
There hasn’t been any concrete movement yet with Galatasaray, but City are already looking ahead. They've been linked with FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa, but now James Trafford’s name is also back in the mix.
Trafford’s no stranger to City he came up through their academy, though he never actually played for the first team. After a couple of loan spells, Burnley signed him permanently in 2023.
He played in the Championship last season, helping Burnley earn promotion back to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season. He had a standout year only 16 goals conceded and 29 clean sheets. City see that as a sign he’s ready for the big stage.
According to The Times, City are ready to trigger his £40 million buy-back clause they sold him to Burnley for £15 million, but smartly included an option to bring him back.
Speaking on ex-Man United keeper Ben Foster’s podcast, Trafford once said he’s always dreamed of playing for a top Premier League team.
“I’ve always said my goal is to play for a top English club,” he shared. “Everyone wants to get there, everyone wants to play at that level. To do that, you need to keep playing, get better, and be ready when the opportunity comes. I feel like I’m there now.”
