Manchester City is preparing to trim its squad ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign. Manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly urged the club to release several players during the current summer transfer window.
The Cityzens struggled with consistency last season and failed to maintain their dominance across competitions. In response, the club moved swiftly in June, securing the signings of four new players: Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Aït-Nouri, and Marcus Bettinelli.
Despite the new arrivals, Guardiola has long expressed a preference for managing a smaller, more focused squad. In fact, back in April, the Spanish manager reportedly issued a firm ultimatum to the board, stating that he would consider stepping down if the squad size was not reduced.
According to The Athletic, Manchester City plans to offload six players from the senior and reserve squads. Among those reportedly listed for transfer are Ilkay Gündogan, Mateo Kovačić, and John Stones.
Gündogan, who only returned to the club last season, is now attracting interest from Turkish side Galatasaray. Meanwhile, Kovačić—despite featuring regularly—is still seen as a valuable asset that could be sold.
John Stones is also expected to depart, as recurring injuries have limited his availability. The club believes his absence will not significantly impact the team’s overall strength.
In addition to senior players, several young talents are also likely to leave, primarily on loan deals to gain more playing time. Claudio Echeverri and Nico O’Reilly are among those set to be loaned to European clubs for further development.
Oscar Bobb is expected to remain at the club unless a substantial offer is received, as City continues to view him as a long-term prospect.
Jack Grealish is reportedly close to an exit after being omitted from the FIFA Club World Cup squad. Meanwhile, James McAtee, Kalvin Phillips, and Máximo Perrone have also been placed on the club’s transfer list.
