Manchester United are intensifying their efforts to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season, with the aim of easing the burden on young striker Rasmus Højlund. One of their primary targets is Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres, who has emerged as a prolific scorer and a standout performer during the 2024/2025 campaign.
According to journalist Pedro Sousa, United are prepared to offer up to £69 million, including performance-based add-ons, to secure the Swedish striker’s services an amount that reportedly surpasses the bid made by Arsenal.
However, Arsenal are currently a step ahead, having already reached a personal agreement with Gyökeres. This development puts pressure on United to act swiftly to avoid losing out in the transfer race.
While the Gunners have agreed terms with the player, they have yet to meet Sporting CP’s full asking price. In contrast, Manchester United are said to be willing to meet the Portuguese club’s valuation in full, underlining their determination to bring in a high-caliber backup and potential partner for Højlund.
Complicating matters is the reportedly strained relationship between Sporting head coach Rúben Amorim and the club’s management, which could influence the direction and pace of negotiations.
Gyökeres, 27, is known for his physical strength, pace, and clinical finishing. He scored 29 goals last season and played a pivotal role in Sporting's attack. His strong rapport with Amorim whom he has publicly praised for a system that suits his playing style could also be a key factor in his decision-making.
Even though United will not be competing in European competitions next season, their pursuit of Gyökeres signals clear ambition. His arrival would not only bolster the squad but also provide healthy competition for Højlund up front.
