La Liga giants FC Barcelona officially announced on Monday evening (July 7, 2025) that goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has signed a contract extension, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2027.
The extension serves as a recognition of the Polish goalkeeper’s outstanding performances, particularly impressive given that he was originally signed as an emergency solution.
Szczęsny’s arrival at Camp Nou was unexpected. Following a long-term injury to first-choice keeper Marc-André ter Stegen, Barcelona were forced to find a replacement outside the regular transfer window.
At the time, Szczęsny had been without a club for several months and had even hinted at retirement. Nonetheless, he embraced the opportunity, and it turned out to be a turning point both for him and the club.
Throughout the 2024/25 season, Szczęsny made 30 appearances and kept 14 clean sheets. Remarkably, Barcelona remained unbeaten in every La Liga match he started.
Beyond his impressive statistics, head coach Hansi Flick praised Szczęsny’s maturity and leadership—qualities that proved invaluable in guiding the club’s younger players.
Prior to joining Barcelona, Szczęsny’s career was widely considered to be in decline. After leaving Juventus, many believed his professional journey was nearing its end. However, his decision to accept Barcelona’s offer has reaffirmed his status as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers over the past decade.
In his debut season with the Catalan side, Szczęsny helped Barcelona secure a domestic treble: La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
These titles bring his personal trophy count to 14, including notable individual honors such as Polish Footballer of the Year (2022) and Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year (2019/20).
During his seven seasons with Juventus, Szczęsny won three Scudetti, three Coppa Italia titles, and two Supercoppa Italiana. Across his professional career, he has made over 500 senior appearances, including 83 UEFA Champions League matches eight of them with Barcelona.
