Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the transfer of Jamie Gittens to Chelsea, acknowledging that the negotiation process was far from straightforward. Nonetheless, the club has extended its best wishes for Gittens as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.
The young winger is on the verge of completing a move to Stamford Bridge in a deal reportedly worth £55 million. He is expected to sign a seven-year contract that will keep him at Chelsea until 2032. The transfer will be finalized following the FIFA Club World Cup.
With both Dortmund and Chelsea set to participate in the tournament, discussions between the two clubs were able to take place directly in Fort Lauderdale, United States. Dortmund initially resisted Chelsea's advances, particularly before the Club World Cup, but eventually relented under continued negotiations.
The German club ultimately respected Gittens’ desire to return to England and prove himself in the Premier League.
“Jamie Gittens’ career is a prime example of how BVB develops young talent. We identified him early, brought him in for virtually no fee, nurtured him through our academy, and provided him the platform to play at the professional level,” said Borussia Dortmund CEO Lars Ricken on the club’s official website.
“Jamie repaid that trust with his commitment, performances, and goals. His move back to England represents a significant financial benefit for us. We wish him all the very best in his future endeavors.”
Gittens joined Dortmund from Manchester City’s youth system in 2020 and was promoted to the first team two years later. He made 107 appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals and providing 14 assists.
“The negotiations with Chelsea were intense, but in the end, we’re satisfied that our key objectives were met,” added Dortmund’s Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl.
