Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has begun to outline his strategic vision for the upcoming season, making it clear to club management that he wants to retain two players previously listed for potential departure Eric García and Fermín López.
Despite understanding the club’s need to offload certain players to register new signings amid financial constraints, Flick has expressed a strong desire to keep both García and López in the squad. Eric García, the 24 year old central defender, has been protected by Flick since last season, due to his professionalism and consistent performances.
Barcelona is now expected to accelerate contract extension talks with García, whose current deal runs until June 2026. The defender’s own willingness to remain at the club is likely to facilitate negotiations.
The second player Flick has deemed non-transferable is 22 year old midfielder Fermín López. Although not a regular starter last season, the Andalusian has made a strong impression on the German coach, who values his development and impact when called upon.
López’s standout performances during the club’s preseason tour two years ago remain fresh in the minds of the coaching staff. Moreover, the midfielder is reportedly eager to fight for his place in the first team and has no intention of leaving. Having come through the ranks and spent time on loan at Linares, López views Barcelona as his dream club.
While Barcelona continues to face financial pressures and may need to make sacrifices to balance wages and accommodate new signings, Flick has made it clear that García and López should not be part of any financial solution.
With the coach’s stance firmly established, the responsibility now shifts to club management to ensure both players remain part of the squad. This move highlights Flick’s long term vision, placing trust in homegrown talent as he begins a new era at the helm of FC Barcelona.
If all goes according to plan, both Eric García and Fermín López are expected to play key roles in Flick’s Barcelona project moving forward.
