Barcelona is preparing a new strategic approach for the 2025/2026 season, with a strong focus on managing the physical condition of star striker Robert Lewandowski. At 36 years old, the Polish forward remains a key player, but the club is keen to avoid unnecessary risks related to fatigue and injury.
Despite his age, Lewandowski delivered an outstanding performance last season. He scored 27 goals in La Liga and a total of 42 goals across all competitions just narrowly missing out on the European Golden Shoe, which was claimed by Kylian Mbappé.
However, the heavy workload he shoulders in Barcelona’s attack has prompted the club to reassess his role. Sporting Director Deco has confirmed that the team is planning to implement a more measured rotation system for the veteran striker.
In addition to relying on Lewandowski, Barcelona is also preparing several alternative options. Interestingly, Deco has mentioned some unexpected names who could step in to share the attacking duties next season.
Although Lewandowski is no longer in his prime, his goal-scoring prowess remains undiminished. Since joining Barcelona, he has netted an impressive 101 goals in 147 appearances an exceptional record.
The 2024/2025 campaign marked his best La Liga season since arriving in Spain. He featured in 32 of the 38 league matches and was among the team's most consistent performers alongside Pedri and Raphinha.
Nevertheless, concerns over fatigue and the potential for injury have led Barcelona’s management to take a more cautious approach. The club plans to closely monitor and regulate Lewandowski’s minutes on the pitch.
New head coach Hansi Flick is expected to track Lewandowski’s workload meticulously. As part of this plan, the striker was granted an extended break in early June and was withdrawn from international duty with Poland.
This strategy may be repeated during future international breaks to preserve his fitness. Deco emphasized the importance of maintaining balance to ensure Lewandowski remains sharp throughout the season.
Rotation will be key, and there are no guarantees that Lewandowski will start every match. Next season, his role is likely to be more targeted focusing on key moments and crucial fixtures where his experience and clinical finishing can make the greatest impact.
