Chelsea still aren’t entirely satisfied with their goalkeeping options. According to reports, the Blues are considering a move for Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen in the upcoming January transfer window.
Rumors about Chelsea’s interest actually started circulating back in the summer of 2025. The London club has long admired Ter Stegen for his experience and composure between the posts.
At the time, though, the German goalkeeper was recovering from back surgery and focused on regaining his place in Barcelona’s starting lineup. Now, at 33, Ter Stegen is reportedly close to full fitness.
Unfortunately for him, Barça’s goalkeeping spots are currently held by Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny, leaving limited room for competition.
According to Tribuna, Chelsea are preparing a loan proposal for January 2026, aiming to bring Ter Stegen in for the remainder of the season.
Barcelona, on the other hand, are not expected to stand in the way of the deal. Letting Ter Stegen go could help ease their wage bill, and the German’s contract valid until the summer of 2028 provides flexibility for all parties.
If the move materializes and Ter Stegen impresses in London, Chelsea would reportedly have the option to make the deal permanent with Barcelona likely giving the green light.
