Morocco wrapped up their 2026 World Cup Qualifying campaign in style not only securing a win but also breaking a world record previously held by Spain.
Already qualified for the World Cup, the Atlas Lions finished strong with a 1-0 victory over Congo on Wednesday morning (Oct 15, 2025), thanks to a 63rd-minute goal from Youssef En-Nesyri.
With that result, Morocco completed the qualifiers with a perfect record: eight wins out of eight, collecting 24 points nine clear of Niger in second place in Group E. They scored 22 goals and conceded just two.
But the highlight? Morocco set a new world record with 16 consecutive wins, surpassing the previous benchmark held by Spain.
Their incredible run began on June 7, 2024, with a 2-1 win over Zambia. Since then, Morocco have gone 19 months unbeaten, racking up 50 goals and conceding only four. Their last non-win came in a goalless friendly draw against Mauritania back in March 2024.
Spain’s record, by comparison, stretched from their 3-0 win over Russia in the Euro 2008 semifinal to a 2-0 victory over South Africa at the 2009 Confederations Cup a streak that ended with a loss to the USA in the tournament’s semifinal.
The historic run has boosted Morocco’s confidence, and they’re now eyeing Argentina as a potential opponent in a high-profile friendly next month part of their preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations later this year.
“Our mission is to face Argentina,” Morocco head coach Walid Regragui told Sportbible. “It’s true that we’re in talks with them, but it’s complicated and honestly, it might not happen in the end.”
