Despite failing to secure a spot in European competitions last season, AC Milan remains a serious contender in the race for the 2025/2026 Serie A title. Former Juventus striker Fernando Llorente believes the Rossoneri have a strong chance of reclaiming the top spot in Italian football.
On paper and statistically, Milan may not be among the preseason favorites. Many pundits rank them below Inter Milan, Napoli, and Juventus based on last season’s underwhelming performances. However, Italian football is no stranger to surprises, and history has shown that a resurgence is always possible.
Napoli, for instance, bounced back from a disappointing season to claim the Scudetto a trajectory many believe AC Milan could replicate under new head coach Massimiliano Allegri. The club, having endured a turbulent campaign, now has the opportunity to rebuild. A young, promising squad, the arrival of a seasoned manager with a fresh tactical approach, and a strong desire to redeem themselves could serve as the foundation for a successful season.
Interestingly, this optimism is echoed by someone with firsthand experience in Serie A. Llorente, who played under both Allegri and Antonio Conte during his time at Juventus, sees next season’s title race as wide open. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he highlighted Milan as a team to watch.
“Allegri will certainly be competing with Conte. He may enjoy a joke, but make no mistake he’s a winner, just like Conte,” said Llorente.
While he stopped short of naming Milan as the outright favorite, Llorente acknowledged the potential of major clubs across the league. He also commented on reports linking Napoli with a stunning move for Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.
“Napoli are the reigning champions and will reinforce their squad. Signing De Bruyne would be a masterstroke a player who has shaped City’s recent history. Antonio is obsessed with his work, and I’m confident he could give the Belgian star a second youth,” Llorente added.
