Frenkie de Jong has agreed to a new contract that will keep him at Barcelona until 2029, reaffirming his status as a key figure in the heart of the Blaugrana midfield.
The Dutch international, who joined Barça in 2019, was set to see his current deal expire in June 2026. Without an extension, he would’ve been free to negotiate with other clubs as early as January.
According to ESPN, Barcelona have been in talks with De Jong over a renewal for several months. However, discussions were delayed at one point due to the midfielder changing his agent.
Sources within the club reveal that De Jong’s new contract includes a lower base salary compared to his previous deal—something that helps ease the financial burden on the club. The midfielder has been one of the highest earners in the squad.
His previous contract, signed during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, included salary deferrals that were scheduled to be repaid in the later years of the deal. This structure placed significant strain on the club’s finances, leading to Barcelona considering his sale to Manchester United in 2022.
Despite the rumors and occasional tension with club executives, De Jong consistently expressed his desire to stay. Ultimately, Barça's financial situation has gradually improved, and De Jong remained loyal, going on to make over 250 appearances for the club. He currently serves as the team’s third captain, behind Marc-André ter Stegen and Ronald Araújo.
During his time in Catalonia, De Jong has won six trophies, including La Liga titles in 2023 and 2025.
