Memphis Depay has already made history as the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer since September. This month, he adds another milestone to his name becoming the national team’s all-time assist leader as well.
Depay was the standout performer in the Netherlands’ dominant 4-0 win over Finland in their 2026 World Cup Qualifier in Amsterdam on Sunday. He scored once from the penalty spot and provided two assists one each for Donyell Malen and Virgil van Dijk. The other goal came from Cody Gakpo.
His penalty goal brought his total tally to 54 goals for the Oranje, extending his lead as the nation’s top scorer. He surpassed Robin van Persie’s record of 50 goals last month with a brace against Lithuania in a 3-2 win. Just last week, he was also on the scoresheet in a 4-0 victory over Malta.
According to the BBC, his two assists against Finland now take him past Wesley Sneijder in the assist charts. The Corinthians forward now sits at 35 assists two more than Sneijder.
At just 31 years old, Depay still has a shot at breaking another long-standing record: most international appearances for the Netherlands. That record currently belongs to Sneijder, who retired with 134 caps. Depay, currently on 106 appearances, ranks sixth all-time but is the highest among active players.
His latest records come at a crucial time for the Dutch, who are edging closer to securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup. Ronald Koeman’s side currently tops Group G with 16 points from six matches, three points ahead of second-placed Poland.
The Netherlands will face Poland in Warsaw on November 14. A win would seal their ticket to next year’s tournament in North America.
