Chelsea have been dealt a blow with the news that Cole Palmer’s injury could keep him out longer than initially expected, ruling him out beyond the international break.
Palmer has been dealing with a recurring groin issue since July, which has limited him to just four appearances so far this season.
The 23-year-old last featured in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United on September 20, where he started the match but was forced off after just 21 minutes.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had initially played down concerns, stating that Palmer wouldn’t require surgery and was expected to be out for about three weeks. The hope was that he'd return shortly after the international break.
The Blues are scheduled to face Nottingham Forest on Saturday, October 18, but Palmer's availability for that game is now in serious doubt.
“I’d be surprised if he’s ready for that one,” said England manager Thomas Tuchel when asked about Palmer’s chances of featuring.
According to the BBC, Palmer could be sidelined until November, with further meetings planned between the player and Chelsea’s medical staff to determine the next steps in his recovery.
Palmer played an exhausting 52 matches during the 2024/25 season and had limited rest over the summer after featuring in the FIFA Club World Cup, which may have contributed to his current condition.
