Jarell Quansah has finally opened up about his decision to leave Liverpool during the summer transfer window. The young English defender is currently enjoying a strong start to life at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
The 22-year-old made a £35 million move shortly after Liverpool secured the Premier League title. Speaking candidly, Quansah revealed that the main reason behind the transfer was his desire for more regular playing time.
With new manager Arne Slot favoring more experienced players, Quansah found opportunities limited and felt that a move abroad would be the best step for his development.
Now settling in well at Leverkusen, Quansah has impressed with consistent performances in the opening weeks of the season. He has also earned the trust of head coach Kasper Hjulmand, who has given him a key role in the team’s defense.
“It wasn’t easy to leave a club where I grew up and developed,” Quansah admitted. “But at this stage in my career, playing regularly is the most important thing—and that meant making a bold decision.”
At Liverpool, Quansah often found himself behind the likes of Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk in the pecking order, making it tough to showcase his full potential.
“I learned a lot from being around some of the best players in the world at Liverpool,” he told Liverpool Echo. “But turning 22, almost 23, I realized I need hundreds of games under my belt to reach the level I’m aiming for. That’s why I made the move and going abroad felt like the right path.”
Since arriving in Germany, Quansah has adapted quickly to Leverkusen’s style of play. He scored on his debut and has delivered solid performances in each of his six Bundesliga appearances so far.
His presence at the back has helped Leverkusen maintain an unbeaten run in their last five league games, with the club now firmly in the mix at the top of the table.
Under Hjulmand’s three at the back system, Quansah has become a key figure. In the recent 2-0 win over Union Berlin, he stood out with a commanding display that contributed to yet another clean sheet.
