Florian Wirtz has been in the spotlight since his high-profile move to Liverpool last summer, with the club paying a hefty €125 million for the German star. After impressing at Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz was widely regarded as one of the top young talents in world football.
However, his transition to the Premier League hasn't quite gone as expected. Ten games into the season, Wirtz has managed just one assist and is yet to find the back of the net a far cry from the impact Liverpool and their fans had hoped for.
Despite being regularly included in the squad, Wirtz's influence at Anfield has so far been limited. His underwhelming start has not gone unnoticed, and it’s opened the door for other top clubs to keep tabs on his situation.
According to a report from Defensa Central, Xabi Alonso has reportedly advised Real Madrid to monitor Wirtz’s progress in England. The Spanish manager, who played a key role in Wirtz’s development during their time together at Leverkusen, is said to be interested in the possibility of reuniting with the midfielder at the Bernabéu.
Alonso’s connection to Wirtz could be a major factor if Madrid decide to make a move, but signing him won’t be easy. Liverpool are unlikely to let go of the 22-year-old anytime soon, especially after losing Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer. On top of that, Wirtz still carries a massive price tag.
Cost is certainly a major hurdle for Madrid. The club already has young attacking midfielders like Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler, who are competing for similar roles. Moreover, Madrid is reportedly prioritizing more financially strategic signings, such as targeting Ibrahima Konaté on a free at the end of the season.
While Wirtz would be an exciting addition, Real Madrid will have to carefully assess whether pursuing him makes sense both financially and in terms of their overall squad strategy.
