AS Roma failed to convert three penalty kicks in their Europa League clash against Lille an unusual and frustrating moment for the club. Club legend Francesco Totti didn’t hold back in sharing his thoughts.
The match took place at the Stadio Olimpico on Friday (October 3, 2025) in the early hours of the morning WIB, as part of Matchday 2 of the Europa League. Roma ended up losing 0-1 after an early goal by Lille’s Hakon Haraldsson in the 6th minute.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 81st minute when a handball by Aissa Mandi awarded them a penalty. Artem Dovbyk stepped up, but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper.
The penalty had to be retaken due to encroachment by a Lille player before the ball was struck. Dovbyk took the shot again, and once again, the Lille keeper denied him.
Incredibly, the referee ordered a third attempt this time due to goalkeeper Berke Özer stepping off his line early. Matias Soulé took over the duties from Dovbyk, but even he couldn’t beat the keeper.
