Benjamin Sesko journey at Manchester United has kicked off under intense pressure. The 21-year-old striker was brought in from RB Leipzig to help solve United’s goal-scoring issues, and expectations at Old Trafford have been sky-high. Many hoped he’d quickly establish himself as the team’s new goal machine in the Premier League.
But things haven’t quite gone to plan. With just one goal in his first seven appearances, Sesko impact has been underwhelming. Doubts are beginning to emerge about whether he’s ready to lead United’s attack.
The Manchester Derby highlighted his struggles. Sesko had minimal involvement, barely touching the ball and failing to make a real impact. Manager Ruben Amorim subbed him off in the 80th minute, and United went on to suffer a 3-0 defeat to their city rivals.
Even after scoring against Brentford, questions remain about Sesko overall performances and more notably, about how Amorim is managing him. Former United player Lee Sharpe has stepped in with some criticism.
Sharpe believes Amorim may have placed too much pressure on Sesko too soon. He argues that regularly starting the young striker might actually be harming his confidence. According to Sharpe, the club should’ve given Sesko more time to adapt.
As an alternative, Sharpe suggests giving Joshua Zirkzee more minutes on the pitch. He believes Zirkzee could help carry the load up front, allowing Sesko to develop at a more comfortable pace.
"I think Zirkzee deserves a shot," Sharpe told Goal. "I’m a big fan of his and I think he should’ve been playing instead of Amad (Diallo) in the No. 10 role."
"Or even replacing Sesko directly, because right now he doesn’t look fully fit. I get that he needs time to adapt to the Premier League, but the way he’s being used might actually damage his confidence."
