Barcelona have announced that midfielder Gavi is expected to be out for up to five months after undergoing surgery to treat a meniscus injury in his right knee.
The 21 year old had only just returned to training after recovering from an ACL injury in the same knee, which kept him out for 11 months following an incident while on international duty with Spain in November 2023. Since his return, Gavi made just two appearances in August before being sidelined again.
“First team player Pablo Páez Gavira, ‘Gavi’, has undergone arthroscopic surgery to repair a medial meniscus injury,” the club said in an official statement. “The meniscus was sutured in order to preserve it. His recovery time is expected to be around 4 to 5 months.”
Barcelona had initially hoped to avoid surgery, but after further assessments, the decision was made to proceed with the operation.
Gavi had already missed Spain’s recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers and Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano prior to the international break due to the issue.
With a recovery timeline pushing into the final months of the season, it remains unclear whether Gavi will return in time to make a full impact before the summer casting some doubt over his readiness for the 2026 World Cup.
