A surprising twist has emerged in the Premier League transfer rumor mill: Manchester City are now reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Manchester United’s young midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo.
The 20 year old had previously hoped to secure a loan move towards the end of the summer transfer window in search of more playing time. However, Manchester United’s management decided against letting him go.
While Mainoo remains confident in his development at Old Trafford, he's well aware of the importance of regular minutes—especially with the World Cup year approaching.
So far this season, his opportunities have been limited. He’s only featured off the bench in a couple of games, including the clash against Burnley and the high-profile Manchester derby.
Newcastle United were the first club to show serious interest, reportedly preparing a formal approach ahead of the January window. But according to TEAMtalk, Manchester City have now entered the picture.
Pep Guardiola is said to be an admirer of Mainoo’s potential and sees him as a long-term investment for City. The idea is to bring him to the Etihad in 2026, which if it happens would certainly be one of the most sensational transfers in recent memory given the fierce rivalry between the two Manchester clubs.
For now, United are in a relatively secure position, with Mainoo under contract until 2027 and an option to extend for another year. The club reportedly values him at around £70 million.
Still, talks over a contract extension don’t appear to be a current priority leaving room for speculation to grow. And if United don’t act swiftly, top clubs will be ready to capitalize on the situation.
