Alvaro Morata is choosing to stay silent for now on the reasons behind his departure from AC Milan last season. The Spanish striker, who is currently on loan at Como, says he’ll only speak openly about the matter once he retires from football.
Morata joined Milan from Atlético Madrid at the start of the 2024–25 season. He scored six goals in 25 appearances across all competitions before being loaned out to Galatasaray in February. During his time in Turkey, he netted seven times in 16 matches.
This season, with Milan no longer counting on him, Morata is back in Italy on loan at newly promoted Como. Although his loan deal with Galatasaray was initially set to run until January 2026, the Turkish club agreed to terminate it early after reaching a compensation agreement.
After Como’s 1–1 draw with Genoa in Serie A on Tuesday (September 16, 2025), Morata was asked about his exit from Milan. His response came after a journalist criticized his performance last season.
“If you think a difficult season means winning three trophies, then I don’t agree,” Morata said, as quoted by Football Italia. Last season, he lifted the Italian Super Cup with Milan and also won the Turkish league and cup with Galatasaray.
“With Milan, we beat Real Madrid at the Bernabéu in the Champions League, and we won the Supercoppa against Juventus and Inter,” he added. “It wasn’t a bad season. It’s true the way I left wasn’t ideal but I can’t talk about that yet. Maybe once I stop playing, I’ll explain everything.”
Back in June, Morata had told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he “no longer felt comfortable” at Milan and chose to leave “before becoming a problem.” There were also rumors that he was not part of new coach Sergio Conceição’s plans, who replaced Paulo Fonseca the man who had signed him.
Now under the management of Massimiliano Allegri, Milan appear to have moved on. With Christopher Nkunku arriving this summer, Morata’s time at San Siro seems all but over. While he’s still under contract with Milan until 2028, there’s a real chance Como could make his move permanent at the end of the season.
