Thiago Alcantara is officially back at FC Barcelona, this time stepping into a new role as assistant coach to Hansi Flick.
Following his retirement in 2024, Thiago was briefly appointed to a similar position at the start of last season. His main role was to help ease Flick’s transition into life at Barcelona and into Spanish football in general.
Fluent in German thanks to his time at Bayern Munich where he played under Flick during their treble winning 2019/2020 season Thiago was seen as a perfect bridge between the coach and the squad. Unfortunately, his stint lasted only two months due to bureaucratic complications related to his residency in England, forcing him to return to Liverpool.
After resolving those issues, Thiago has now rejoined Barcelona and will once again take up the assistant coaching position. His return became possible after the club adjusted their wage bill, making room for his appointment.
“Thiago Alcantara’s first official day as part of the coaching staff. On Thursday, the former Barça player joined training as a member of the first-team technical staff, taking on the role of assistant coach to Hansi Flick. His responsibilities will include contributing to tactical planning and training session preparations, among other duties bringing his experience and vision of the game to elevate the team's daily work,” the club said in an official statement.
A product of La Masia, Thiago made 101 appearances and scored 11 goals for Barcelona’s first team after making his debut in 2009. He moved to Bayern Munich in 2013, playing 235 matches and scoring 31 goals before joining Liverpool in 2020.
