Barcelona has been hit with a fresh wave of injury concerns, with midfield duo Gavi and Frenkie de Jong both sidelined in quick succession.
Gavi was the first to go down, picking up a knee issue during Barcelona's clash with Rayo Vallecano two weeks ago. The 21 year old is reportedly feeling discomfort in his right knee the same one that suffered a serious ligament injury last season, which kept him out for nine months.
However, this time the problem isn’t with the ligament but rather the meniscus. The club has opted for a conservative approach, choosing to rest Gavi for at least the next three weeks while closely monitoring his recovery.
Should the situation fail to improve, surgery may be on the table, potentially extending his time on the sidelines—an unfortunate setback considering Gavi had only just returned to full fitness. He featured in 42 games last season, scoring three goals and providing three assists, playing a key role in Barcelona’s domestic double. He’s also made two appearances this season, notching one assist.
Adding to the midfield woes, Frenkie de Jong has also picked up a knock. The 28 year old suffered a minor muscle strain while on duty with the Netherlands during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
While the injury is not considered serious, de Jong is likely to miss Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga match against Valencia this weekend, as well as their midweek Champions League clash at St James’ Park.
