Spain continues to shine under the guidance of head coach Luis de la Fuente. The Matadors have now gone 27 competitive matches without a single defeat.
Their latest statement win came in a dominant performance against Turkey in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers (Group E) on Monday morning (September 8, 2025, WIB). La Furia Roja cruised to a commanding 6–0 victory on the road.
Arsenal’s makeshift striker Mikel Merino stole the spotlight with a sensational hat-trick, while Spanish midfielder Pedri chipped in with a brace of his own. Ferran Torres rounded out the scoring with a well-taken goal.
The win solidifies Spain’s position at the top of Group E, having taken maximum points from their opening two matches. The reigning European champions look to be in top form on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
The victory also extended an impressive run: Spain has now gone 27 consecutive competitive matches unbeaten not counting friendlies. The breakdown? 22 wins and 5 draws. Their last competitive loss came back in 2023, a 0–2 defeat to Scotland in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
While Spain did fall to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final earlier this year, that loss came via penalty shootout after a 2–2 draw in extra time meaning the result still counts as a draw in official records.
This current streak is now the second-longest unbeaten run in Spain’s history, trailing only the 29 game stretch under Vicente del Bosque from 2010 to 2013.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente shared his thoughts on the milestone:
“We know our players very well, and we’re aware of their ability to stay disciplined and follow our system,” he told AS Diario. “We’ve created an environment where they feel comfortable and have a clear idea of what we want to achieve. Right now, we’re functioning at an exceptional level as a team.”
