Manchester City's new goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, has shared the reason behind his move to the Etihad Stadium and it turns out Pep Guardiola played a major role in the decision.
This summer, Donnarumma found himself in search of a new club after parting ways with Paris Saint-Germain, despite helping the French side secure a historic treble last season.
While several top European clubs were reportedly interested in the Italian shot-stopper, he made a last-minute decision to join Manchester City on transfer deadline day.
Speaking recently, Donnarumma revealed that one of the biggest factors influencing his move was Pep Guardiola's personal interest.
“I honestly really wanted to join Man City,” Donnarumma said. “They showed a genuine desire to bring me in, and I could feel how much Pep Guardiola wanted me here.”
According to Donnarumma, Guardiola’s confidence in him played a crucial role in his decision.
“Pep truly believes in me, and that means a lot. When a manager like him shows that kind of trust, it’s hard to say no,” he added.
The 25-year-old also believes that joining City is the right step forward in his career, citing the club's recent dominance in both English and European football.
“This is one of the strongest teams in the world, and I’m proud to be a part of it. I’m excited for what’s ahead,” he concluded.
