Raul Gonzalez has reportedly become a strong candidate to take over as Bayer Leverkusen’s new head coach, following the dismissal of Erik Ten Hag.
Ten Hag was only appointed this summer but lasted just two Bundesliga matches before being let go. Leverkusen suffered a 1–2 defeat to Hoffenheim and were held to a 3–3 draw by Werder Bremenresults that fell short of expectations. Reports also suggest that Ten Hag’s strained relationship with the club’s management contributed to the decision.
Looking to move quickly, Leverkusen are now targeting Raul Gonzalez as a replacement. According to Marca, the Spanish legend has emerged ahead of other contenders, including former Dortmund coaches Edin Terzic and Marco Rose.
The club is expected to use the current international break to open talks with Raul, who is currently unattached after stepping down from his role with Real Madrid Castilla earlier this season.
The 48-year-old has spent the majority of his coaching career with Real Madrid's youth teams, guiding various age groups and notably leading the U-19 squad to UEFA Youth League glory in the 2019/2020 season. While he has yet to manage a senior team, Raul is no stranger to German football he played for Schalke between 2010 and 2012.
His blend of coaching promise and Bundesliga experience as a player makes him an intriguing option as Leverkusen look to turn the page.
