Bad news for Napoli fans star striker Romelu Lukaku has picked up a thigh injury during preseason, raising concerns about the club’s attacking depth. Could a new signing be on the horizon?
Lukaku sustained the injury in Napoli’s friendly match against Olympiacos on Sunday (August 17). While it's been confirmed that it’s a thigh issue, Tribuna reports there’s still no official update on the severity of the injury.
Naturally, the situation has Napoli a bit on edge. Behind Lukaku, the only immediate backup is 24-year-old Lorenzo Lucca, who just returned from a loan spell at Udinese.
Two more forwards Giuseppe Ambrosino (21) and Walid Cheddira (27) are also back from loan, but neither seems to be part of Antonio Conte’s plans for the upcoming season.
If Lukaku’s injury turns out to be serious, Napoli may head back into the transfer market. The club was previously linked with Darwin Núñez, but the Liverpool striker’s price tag proved too high and he's now off to Al Hilal.
At this point, it’s unclear who Napoli might target next. What’s certain is that the club still has faith in Lukaku and hopes to see the Belgian striker back on the pitch soon.
