Manchester City are reportedly considering a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma, should Ederson Moraes decide to leave the club. While there’s been no official confirmation from the club, the rumor mill is beginning to pick up speed.
Speculation started after Donnarumma was left out of PSG’s squad for the UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham—just days after the club signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille. This decision has only intensified questions about the Italian goalkeeper’s future in Paris.
Despite being offered a contract extension earlier this summer, Donnarumma’s position has looked increasingly uncertain. Head coach Luis Enrique has publicly stated his preference for a goalkeeper with a different profile, further fueling the uncertainty.
Sources close to City have dismissed claims of direct talks with Donnarumma as premature, but they haven’t ruled out the possibility especially if Ederson chooses to move on.
Over in Paris, PSG are reportedly open to selling Donnarumma and could look to cash in on a player they signed on a free transfer four years ago.
As it stands, Ederson remains City's first-choice goalkeeper and is entering the final year of his contract. In June, the Brazilian publicly stated he had no intention of leaving. However, that stance could change if a tempting offer lands on the table. Recently, he’s been linked with a move to Galatasaray, though no official bid has been submitted.
With no formal contact yet between City and Donnarumma, any potential transfer remains in the realm of speculation. That said, as the transfer window nears its close, the situation could escalate quickly. Should City opt for a major shake-up in goal, Donnarumma is seen as a top candidate.
The big question, however, is whether Donnarumma would fit into Pep Guardiola’s system. At 25, the Italian keeper is known for his shot-stopping and quick reflexes, but his footwork has often drawn criticism something crucial in Guardiola’s philosophy, where the goalkeeper is expected to initiate play and distribute the ball accurately.
Last season in Ligue 1, Donnarumma posted a pass accuracy of 85.4% just shy of Ederson’s numbers in the Premier League and ahead of backup keeper Stefan Ortega. That said, Ederson has the edge when it comes to offensive contribution, having registered eight assists during his time at City.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague weighed in, saying that while Donnarumma has his flaws, he remains one of the best in the business.
“He’s not the best with his feet, unless he tells himself, ‘I can improve that,’” Balague told BBC Radio 5 Live.
