David De Gea has set foot at Old Trafford once again, marking his first visit back since parting ways with Manchester United two years ago. The Spanish goalkeeper made it clear that he holds no hard feelings about how his departure unfolded.
Back in 2023, De Gea was close to extending his contract with the club, but ultimately chose to leave as a free agent. His exit brought an end to a remarkable 12-year stint at United, during which he won the club’s Player of the Year award four times.
Now back in Manchester to face Fiorentina in a pre-season friendly, De Gea opened up about his journey, his connection with the club, and life after United. He shared some insight into the decision to move on and reflected on what that chapter of his career meant to him.
So, how does De Gea feel about his departure, and what does he make of his time at Manchester United? Here's what he had to say.
"I’m not disappointed," De Gea said. "Sometimes football is just like that — not everything is in your control."
"I spent 12 years here. It was a beautiful time and one of the best experiences of my life."
Looking back on his time at United, De Gea spoke with pride and gratitude. Playing for such a massive club, he said, made him appreciate the challenge of staying at the top for so long.
"Playing for this club was incredible. It’s only after you leave that you realize how big it really is — and how tough it is to stay for 12 years."
"I’ll always be grateful to the club and everyone involved. It’s been an amazing journey."
